Seize the Opportunities that the Holiday Season Brings

Twinkling lights, party invites, and candy cane stripes; known as the cuffing season, the coming holidays bring about nostalgic thoughts of snuggles next to a warm fire and the excitement of gathering in-person again. Not only does the holiday season come with a plethora of opportunities to find that cuddle buddy, but single men are pursuing more women this time of year.

A Pew Research Center study found that men are now more likely than women to be unpartnered, which means that there are more single men to meet during the holidays than in previous times. This means that they are more likely to be active on dating sites and apps right now. So, swipe away girl!

You definitely don’t want to limit yourself, though. Seize the opportunities that the holiday season brings to meet new people. Take advantage and get out there. Whether it’s someone to date or a wing-woman to go out and have fun with, you never know who you might meet.

Seize the opportunities that the holiday season brings

If you get invited to a holiday party, don’t decline because you don’t have a companion to go with you. In fact, attending solo could very well work in your favor. When you show up to an event alone, you’ll be more approachable and more likely to strike up a conversation with a stranger.

Easier said than done? Here are some simple tips. When sidling up to someone for the first time, keep it light. Give them a compliment or make a light joke about something you’ve noticed. Ask them an easy question about themselves like: How do you know the hosts? And always remember – people love talking about themselves.

Seasonal soirées aren’t the only places to encounter a new interest and make new friends. Volunteer at your local community center, or if you celebrate Christmas, at the local tree lot. Help out at a food pantry, senior living center, or homeless shelter. You’ll be a step ahead of the game, as you’ll know that your fellow volunteers hold at least some of the same values as you do.

There’s an array of sporting events to enjoy during the holiday season. Head to a restaurant or bar to watch the World Cup or cheer on your favorite (American) football team. You just might connect with someone who’s a fan like you – or start a friendly rivalry! Even if you’re not keen on either American football or international football (aka soccer), basketball or hockey, you can still appreciate the company. You’ll be setting up a great opportunity to ask questions about the game you are watching. Who doesn’t love showcasing their knowledge?

Don’t limit yourself to just talking with men. Open yourself up to making girlfriends! You are not the only single woman looking for a man later in life. While some of your friends are likely at home with their kids and husbands, this is the perfect time to make new acquaintances and meet someone wonderful.

The holidays are a time of inclusion, not isolation. Take advantage of what’s out there to get to know new people and expose yourself to new experiences. Even if you don’t meet a future beau or close friend, you will have expanded your horizons by doing something new. Have an open mind and leave your expectations at the door. Step out of your house and your comfort zone. The perfect person of any gender just might be waiting for you on the other side.
